New Zealand Surf lifesavers will be expected to wear masks while on duty.

The new requirement was announced by Surf Lifesaving last week.

The move makes New Zealand the first country in the world to require its lifeguards to wear masks whilst on duty.

Life guards will be given cotton masks to wear when patrolling the beach.

Obviously, the life savers will be able to take the masks off when performing a rescue.
