Last Friday the new Super Rugby season kicked off with the Chiefs playing the Highlanders. The Chiefs lost to the Highlanders 30-27, Aaron Smith scoring a try in the 75th minute.

The other match on Friday was the Brumbies beating the Rebels 34-27 in Canberra. Saturday’s first two games were very close with the Crusaders edging the Blues 24-22, even with Ma’a Nonu returning to play one more season for the Blues, and the Hurricanes managing to beat the Waratahs 20-19 with a try in the last minutes of the game.

The last game on Saturday was completely different to the first two games that day, as the Sharks eased past the Sunwolves 45-10 in Singapore.

Sunday started with the Bulls thrashing the Stormers 40-3 in South Africa, and ended with last year’s finalists the Lions beating the Jaguares 25-16 in Argentina with a hat-trick from Marnus Schoeman winning the match for them. The Queensland Reds had a bye this week and will play their first match on Friday night against the Highlanders.

The top teams in the standings so far are the Bulls and the Sharks, both on 5 points from winning their matches and earning a bonus point from scoring 3 or more tries than their opponent. Overall the first week of Super Rugby was exciting and thrilling to watch, and next week should be more of the same.
