An elderly female Sumatran tiger died at Wellington Zoo on Friday night, to the sadness and dismay of staff and zoo visitors.
Cantik, the 21 year old tiger from Wellington Zoo was an amazing attraction at Wellington Zoo, but she was more than that. She was a great friend that will be very much missed.
Cantik was growing old and was suffering from some bad diseases and severe arthritis.
The Zoo staff believed that Cantik would not survive the difficult treatment she would need to take to become healthy again, so the decision was made to put Cantik down.
“Cantik was loved by everyone at Wellington Zoo and has lived a long, full life here” said Mr Paul Horton, one of Cantik’s carers. Cantik had a son, Rokan, so her name will live on.
