Experts in Italy have warned that the world famous statue, Michelangelo’s David, is in danger of collapsing due to weak ankles.

It has be determined that the marble used in the masterpiece was poor quality and has resulted in cracks appearing in the legs of the statue.

The fractures are a warning that the 5.5 tonne sculpture may soon collapse under it’s own weight.

Previous cracks have been covered with plaster over the years but keep reappearing.

Weak spots discovered in the statues ankles are believed to have developed while “David” was on display for 3 centuries in the city’s main square while leaning on a dangerous angle.

The poor-quality marble Michelangelo chose for the statue, along with the weight of the off-centre pose, has made the 5m statue even more fragile.

It has been suggested that the statue be moved to a quake-proof room or somewhere outside the city, with the fear that an earthquake or road construction could be the end of one of the world’s greatest masterpieces.
