The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews is now open for women to become members.
For 260 years, the R&A has had a male only membership policy, a policy which is very outdated in today’s modern world.
Of the R&A’s 2,500 members worldwide, more than three-quarters voted to decide whether women would be able to become members of the club.
85 percent of the members voted in favour of allowing women to become members of the prestigious Scottish club.
Secretary of the R&A said, “I can confirm that The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews is now a mixed membership club.”
This decision to end the many years of the men only membership policy is a very positive and significant moment in the Club’s history.
The R&A is now the most recent golf club to end a male only policy. This is a great step forward for the sport of golf and it is hoped that other golf clubs with outdated policies will follow suit and open up their clubs to women.
