South Africa have won the final rugby test to claim a 2-1 series victory over the British and Irish Lions.

Veteran goal kicker Morne Steyn kicked over a last-gasp penalty to hand South Africa a narrow 19-16 victory in the final game.

The Lions had won the first test 22-17 but the Springboks were 27-9 victors in the second clash.

The tour was held under heavy Covid-19 restrictions and will be remembered for being a spiteful series. Both teams had complained about the refereeing and accused the other team of cheating.

Incidentally, Steyn also scored a last minute penalty for the Springboks to win the 2009 series over the tourists.

The British and Irish Lions play every four years and alternate between playing South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The next series will be against Australia in 2025.
