Smartphones sales hit one billion

For the first time ever, more than one billion smartphones were sold around the world in a single year.

Official figures from sales in 2013 show a huge increase in the number of devices bought.

It is believed that larger screens, better apps and lower costs contributed to the growth in sales.

The main countries buying smartphones is India and China, where the majority of the phones sold being  the cheaper handsets.

Overall Samsung phones were the top sellers with Apple in second place.
