New Zealand Women’s Sevens team have won a silver medal at the Rio Olympic games.
New Zealand played Australia in the final.
New Zealand scored first with a try to Kayla McAlister. However, Australia soon scored two quick tries in return. New Zealand player Portia Woodman was sin binned at the end of the first half for a deliberate knock-on.
Half time score: Australia 10, New Zealand 5.
Australia ran away with the game (and the gold medal) in the second half with three further tries.
Two late tries in the game to Kayla McAlister and Portia Woodman for New Zealand just wasn’t enough.
Final score Australia 24, New Zealand 17.
The New Zealand girls performed an emotional haka at the conclusion of the game.  They can be very proud of their performance at this Olympics!
