The Silver Ferns controlled the game in Hamilton. However, the England Roses played well in what was their first competitive match since March.
The Silver Ferns finished the first quarter leading 15-10 with goal shoot Maia Wilson in fine form.
The Silver Ferns won the second quarter by three, taking a 32-24 lead into the half-time break.
In the second and third quarters New Zealand continued to edge away, make less mistakes than England and looking slightly more cohesive.
England are without head coach Jess Thirlby, who was forced to stay behind after she tested positive for coronavirus.
The next match of the three-test series is on Friday, before the final game takes place on Sunday.
