A simple shovel has saved NASA’s Mars lander.

Scientists working for NASA have fixed the Mars rover by getting it to hit itself with a shovel.

The ‘InSight’ lander got itself in a bit of trouble when trying to dig a small ditch. It had been attempting to place a probe, called ‘the mole’, into the soil.

The soil was much lumpier than the scientists expected it to be.

After a few failed attempts to get it free, NASA decided the only option was to whack it using the InSight’s own robotic arm.

The solution was risky because it could have damaged parts of the lander, especially the power and communication lines.

But NASA confirmed on social media that the move was a success!
