A Chinese container ship hit a wall of the new lane of the Panama Canal. This is the third crash since the expanded waterway re-opened one month ago.

Xin Fei Zhou, owned by China Shipping Container Lines, was anchored outside the canal and showed the vessel with a sizeable gash in its hull. The ship agent said it was undergoing repairs.

The expansion of the canal allows for triple the size of ships that can pass through the waterway. However, many in the industry have been concerned with the design that left little room for error.

The Panama Canal is a man-made 77 km waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean.
