New Zealand driver Scott Dixon has finished 2nd at the Indy 500.

Dixon was the favourite to win the race as he has been the standout racer this season.

However, Dixon was right behind leader Takuma Sato when a big crash for Spencer Pigot brought the race under caution with five laps remaining.

Officials let the race run out for the Japanese driver under safety car so Dixon was unable to attempt to pass.

Dixon was surprised not to see a red flag, which he said would have played to his advantage.

Dixon previoulsy won the race in 2008 and is the five-time IndyCar champion.
