A bacteria that eats on toxic plastic has been discovered by scientists.
The bug not only breaks the plastic down but uses it as food to power the process.
The bacterium, was found at a waste site where plastic had been dumped.
It is the first time that a bacteria has been known to attack polyurethane.
This is exciting news as millions of tonnes of plastic are produced every year. However, it is mostly sent to landfill because it is to tough to recycle.
While the research has identified the bug and some of its key characteristics, more time must be spent analysing the bacteria before it can be used to treat large amounts of waste plastic.
