The 28th of June marked the beginning of Belgium’s annual sand sculpting festival, organised by Belgium’s Royal Sand Carvers Society.
The festival has taken place each year since 1997 and was the winner of the 2010 Guinness World Record for the largest event of its kind, with over 150 sand creations by 30 of the world’s top carvers.
The festival is 2 months long and is traditionally held on the beaches near the town of Blankenberge, however this year the event was moved to the more central city of Ostend so that it is more accessible to visitors.
This year’s theme is ‘Disneyland Paris Sand Magic’ and is a replica of the theme park’s Paris location.
This year some of the sand highlights include Pirates of the Caribbean, Ratatouille, Dumbo, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Indiana Jones and Cinderella with her evil stepsisters.
For those who aren’t so into sand, there is also the Ice Sculptor Festival in Bruges, Belgium, where the artists use ice to create their masterpieces instead of sand.
Last year 70 characters from Disney’s Frozen were created from ice which were a huge favourite and many are excited to see what’s in store for the ice festival this year! Check out the pictures below!
