Could you run a marathon? How about doing it in temperatures as low as -50 degrees?

That is exactly what fifty athletes from around the world have done in Antarctica.

The athletes were kitted out in balaclavas, goggles, gloves and mittens to protect them against the freezing cold and allow them to run the 42 kilometre course.

The marathon took place on the 18th of November at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica which are over 400 kilometres away from the South Pole.

An earlier marathon saw six runners run a hundred kilometres non-stop!
