The Royal New Zealand Ballet has cancelled its national tour of Swan Lake because of Covid-19 restrictions.

The ballet was taking the performance to five New Zealand cities in May and June.

The company said the tour would not be viable under the ongoing red traffic light settings, even with indoor gathering limits increased to 200.

Based in Wellington, the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) is a company of dynamic dancers from diverse backgrounds, performing a broad repertoire for audiences at home and abroad.

Since June 2017, the company has been under the artistic direction of Patricia Barker.

It was established in 1953 as an independent charitable trust by Royal Danish Ballet Principal Poul Gnatt. It was originally known as The New Zealand Ballet Company.

Swan Lake ticket holders will be contacted directly to arrange a refund, credit or donation.
