A large part of a rocket has crashed into the Moon.

The three-tonne rocket, which was hurtling through space at 8000km/h, hit at around 1.25 am on Saturday morning.

The rocket didn’t damage the Moon and at this stage nobody is claiming ownership of the rocket.

Astronomers first thought the rocket part had been launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX program. However, others thought it was owned by the Chinese, something China denies.

Scientists hope to study the 10-20m-wide crater and the plumes of moon dust created upon impact.

The rocket part was first sighted from Earth in March 2015.
