Rock star Chino Moreno, the lead singer of the band Deftones has played an acoustic set inside an Icelandic volcano for 20 lucky fans on Saturday.

Moreno and fans were lowered more than 120 metres below the earth, inside the dormant chamber of the Thrihnukagigur volcano.

This was the first time a concert has even been held inside a volcano, and tickets weren’t cheap, costing close to $2,500 NZD.

Safety wasn’t expected to be an issue. According to show organizers, Thrihnukagigur hasn’t erupted for more than 4,000 years and experts say there’s no indication it will do so in the near future.

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity, due to its location on a tectonic plate boundary. There are 30 active volcanic systems in the country.
