Tim Harris is preparing to row across Hamilton Gardens’ Turtle Lake, the first to ever cross the lake in New Zealand. However, Tim won’t be navigating any usual boat, instead he will be rowing a pumpkin!
Tim’s 550kg Atlantic Giant Pumpkin has been growing since October and is now ready for its maiden voyage.
Pumpkin sailing has a dedicated following in America and Tim hopes his voyage will encourage others to participate in the sport so NZ can hold a race every year.
Tim’s two children think his pumpkin sailing is great and his wife, although she thinks he is ‘crazy’, is supportive.
Tim will hollow out the pumpkin at the Hamilton Gardens this Sunday and then will hit water at 3pm.
