The head of the Catholic church, Pope Francis, has preached his annual Easter message around the subject of hope.

Pope Francis gave his talk during the Easter Vigil which is held each year in Rome.

Delivering his homily, Francis said: “Today is the celebration of our hope. It is so necessary today.”

The numbers in Rome were down as a number of pilgrims had cancelled their planned trips to Rome in the wake of the violence in Brussels.

However,  St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican was packed when Pope Francis celebrated mass on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning, Francis presided over Easter Mass and offer his annual Easter blessing.
