Pope Benedict XVI has announced he will resign as Pope from February 28, declaring that he lacks the strength to do his job.
He becomes the first pontiff to step down in 600 years. He started his role in 2005 when he took over from Pope John Paul II.
The 85-year-old pope dropped the news in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals. The news apparently even surprised his closest friends.
Benedict called his choice “a decision of great importance for the life of the church”.
There are around 1.2million Catholics around the world who will have to wait until mid March to see who will take over.
