New Zealand police dogs will get better protection with the announcement of stab resistant harness.
The new harnesses have two strong panels to shield the vital organs from stabbing and slashing. It will also protect dogs from being hit by offenders.
The new harnesses are called a ‘Mako’. They were trialed on eight dogs in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and on two armed offenders squad courses over the last month.
The design includes velcro and loops for attachments such as a light or GPS unit. A small camera attachment is also being considered.
The harness will be manufactured in New Zealand by a Hamilton-based specialist.
The vests will be on some dogs next month, with all 130 patrol dogs across New Zealand kitted out by about October.
