A group of polar bears have held a team of Arctic meteorologists working in a remote corner of Russia hostage for almost a week.

Five of the polar bears living in the region have been getting dangerously close to staff at the station.

The team have been unable to leave their hut to do their job properly and take daily sea readings as fights broke out over food between the bears who settled near the weather station in Russia’s far north.

The team tried to scare off the bears with flares but this failed. There are no other weapons available at the station. The Russian government has promised to help get the team out of this situation.

Polar bears in Russia live all along the Arctic coast from Murmansk in the west to Chukotka in the east.

Scientists have discovered a gradual rise in bear attacks on humans in recent years.
