Melbourne Victory have beaten the Wellington Phoenix 3-1 in the first round of the 2019 A-League playoffs.

The result ends the 2019 season for the New Zealand side.

The Phoenix had the best of the opening half, however, they could find a way past the strong Victory defence.

Georg Niedermeier, Kosta Barbarouses and Ola Toivonen all scored for the Melbourne Victory.

Golden boot winner, Roy Krishna, gave Wellington hope at 2-1, but a goal from the Melbourne team with 20minutes to go proved the nail in the coffin.

It was a physical game with the Phoenix racking up seven yellow cards to Victory’s none. Michal Kopczynski was sent off in injury time.

2019 was the first time in 7 years that the Phoenix had made it past the regular season.
