Oscar Pistorius trial starts in South Africa

World famous Paralympic runner, Oscar Pistorius, was in court today in South Africa, facing a number of very serious charges.

Pistorius has been accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

He denies the charges and told the packed courtroom today that he was “not guilty”.

The trial is expected to last for several weeks.

WHO IS OSCAR PETORIUS?
Oscar Petorius is a South African runner. Despite both of his legs being amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old, he is one of the world’s fastest runners.

At the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, he became the first amputee to win an able-bodied world track medal.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Pistorius became the first double leg amputee to participate in the Olympics when he entered the men’s 400 metres.
