Old mobile phones will be used to make the Olympic and Paralympic medals for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The Japanese public will be asked to donate old phones and small appliances to gather two tonnes of gold, silver and bronze for the 5000 medals.

The project hopes to promote sustainability and reduce costs.

To collect the phones boxes will be placed in local offices and telecoms stores from April and will remain there until the metal required has been collected.

Olympic host cities have traditionally obtained the metal from mining firms. However, Japan, which does not have many mineral resources, is keen to take the theme of a sustainable future a step further.

  1. That is crazy. I would not put my old phone in there because I wouldn’t want my phone to become a medal. If I did do it I would want to get it back as a medal.

  2. Why would they make them out of old phones? Wouldn’t they just make it out of gold silver and bronze? I wouldn’t be happy if they gave me a medal made out of old phones I wouldn’t be happy.

  3. Wow!!! I didn’t know that phones were being recycled for medals. It is quite a good idea though, because then old things are being put to good use. I wonder who would have a phone made out of gold though?

  4. I think thats weird that they used a old phone for a metal because I thought they will get new metal and use that. If I come first and i get a old phone for my metal I wont be that happy because I will want more then just a old phone.

  5. This is strange. I would not like to have a medal that was made out of a old phone because they may still have a bit of power in them and electric shock you.

  6. I think that this is a great idea to collect all the things they need to make the medals. But I am wondering if they really do get the things they need to make them.

  7. I think its weird that they use old phones for metals because i thought they will get new metal and then they make the metals with that.If I come first and I come first place and I get a old phone made for my metal I wont be that happy with it

  8. I think this is a good idea because old phones can be recycle and put into good use. Also it is more sustainable because it decreases man hours by not mining for gold.
