The number of students enrolled in New Zealand schools has dropped in 2022.

In total, the number of students has dropped by 11,421 students – the first drop on public record.

The drop in school rolls means that many schools lose funding for teachers.

Primary and Intermediate schools are facing the largest roll decline.

The Ministry of Education said that the fall was to be expected and is “due to relatively larger birth cohorts moving from primary school into secondary schooling”.
