Nomadland has won the best film at the 2021 Oscars.

The film was directed by Chinese born Chloé Zhao, who also won the best director award. The award was significant as she becomes the first woman of colour – and only the second woman at all – to win that award.

Unlike lots of big events over the last year, the 2021 Academy Awards were held in person.

However, the ceremony did look a little different to its usual glamour. Nominees were social distanced between two Hollywood theatres.

Animated film Soul managed to nab two awards at this year’s Oscars. The film won the top prize for best animated feature, beating big films including Onward, Over the Moon and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.

A Netflix documentary called My Octopus Teacher won the Academy Award for best documentary feature. The documentary was about filmmaker and nature expert Craig Foster becoming friends with an octopus and visits it everyday for a entire year.
