The government has announced a bold plan to help look after our planet.

The government has pledged to cut New Zealand’s emissions by 50% by the year 2030.

Previously we had aimed to cut them by 30% so this is another big step forward.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Minister of Climate Change James Shaw announced the new target over the weekend.

Shaw said the new target was part of New Zealand’s commitment to the International Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Sadly, New Zealand will not be able to cut emissions within our own country. We will have to be purchase credits from other countries at a cost of about a billion dollars a year.
