The idea of a new flag for New Zealand has become a popular topic in government.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister John Key, announced the possibility of holding a vote for a change in the New Zealand flag.
Mr Key said that if a vote was to take place voters would be able to choose between the current New Zealand flag or another option picked by the Government.
It is believed that the current flag is now outdated due to its similarity to the Union Jack. New Zealand now has more in common with the Pacific than with the United Kingdom, and some believe the new flag should show this.
However, there is still debate on possible designs for a new flag. Some believe that the silver fern is not necessarily the best alternative for a new flag.
It has been noted that the silver fern can look like a white feather which is a symbol of cowardice. Others agree saying that a colourless, black and white design may easily go unnoticed.
The Prime Minister said that he himself prefers the silver fern for our flag.
