The first group of New Zealand citizens have arrived back home from Afghanistan.

New Zealand has been working with Australia and the United States to bring back New Zealanders from Afghanistan following the Taliban taking control of the country last week.

The first group arrived back in Auckland yesterday afternoon and included families and other visa holders.

This initial evacuation was run by the Australian armed services. All together it included four plane flights out of the Afghan capital Kabul.

Although only a small number of those people then traveled on to New Zealand.

Altogether the New Zealand government is currently helping more than 200 people to evacuate out of Afghanistan.
