An international report into New Zealand fishing has revealed that New Zealand has had years of deliberate fish dumping, catch misreporting and illegal practice.
The report said that New Zealand wasn’t prosecuting skippers who were illegally dumping fish on a major scale.
Fish dumping is when companies catch fish and then dump them later, after the fish is dead.
The report has meant that the Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Gay, has been under pressure to show that New Zealand is carefully managing its resource.
Seafood New Zealand has criticized the report. They say it was a politically motivated attempt to embarrass the government.
