Naomi Osaka withdraws from French Open

Japan’s Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the 2021 French Open.

The move comes after she was fined for not appearing in any post match conferences.

Before the tournament, Osaka said she would not attend media conferences. She said that the way journalists quiz players was impacting on her mental well-being.

She was fined $20,000 by the Roland Garros referee. Added to this, Grand Slam organisers issued a statement saying she may be expelled from future majors if she fails to change her stance.

Osaka, is the current world number two and one of the biggest name’s in women’s sport. She has since explained she has had depression since 2018.
