Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty have been crowned the men’s and women’s French Open champions for 2019.
Nadal was in fine form, beating Austrian fourth seed Dominic Thiem in four sets to win his 12th men’s singles title.
The Spaniard won for the third straight year at Roland Garros with a 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 victory in a high-quality final.
The 33-year-old is the first player to win 12 singles titles at the same Grand Slam and has now won 18 majors overall.
In the women’s draw Ashleigh Barty, from Australia, won her first Grand Slam.
Five years after quitting the sport to play cricket she won 6-1 6-3 over unseeded Czech Marketa Vondrousova.
The win caps off a phenomenal turnaround since returning to tennis in 2016. In 2016 she started with a ranking of 623 and now she is ranked world number 2.
