Monopoly fans from around the world have voted to include a cat token to the property trading game.

Toy maker Hasbro Inc, who own the brand, announced the news that the cat will replace the iron after an on-line voting competition.

The online voting was so close that the shoe, the wheelbarrow and the iron were all neck and neck on the elimination vote. However, passionate efforts by fans who made Facebook pages and ran email campaigns saved a few of the items.

This was the first time in the history of the game that fans have had a chance to have their own say in new aspects of the game.

Other pieces that contested for a spot on Monopoly included a robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar.

The history of Monopoly can be traced back to 1903 when a simple trading game was developed. A number of games then developed and by 1934, a board game called Monopoly had been created which formed the basis of the game we now know.

  1. I believe that putting in a cat is a good decision, because cats go far back as valuable companions. The iron is of the old age, and we are making new technology everyday, so a cat is best in my eyes. Plus, cats are the best animal EVER!
