Passengers on Qantas and Virgin airlines will be able to use their mobile phones on Australian domestic and international flights.

The new law comes into affect from today.

Until now passengers had to turn off phones and other mobile devices because it was considered a safety risk.

At this stage there is no news about weather this will be allowed on Air New Zealand planes.

A spokesman for the airlines said that recent advances in technological mean that there was no interference from mobile phones.

The phones will still have to be in  flight mode and with no network in the sky passengers will only be able to to write emails or text messages that will be sent when they switch back to normal mode after landing.
