Forty people in Auckland have been diagnosed with the infectious measles disease.
Westlake Boys High School is one of the hardest hit communities with 20 ill students. Students who have not been vacinated have been asked to stay at home.
The Auckland Health Service has estimated that around 750 people have been deemed at immediate risk of catching the highly contagious disease.
The majority of the people confirmed with measles have recently been overseas, or have been in contact with someone who has travelled.
Measles is a very serious disease that causes fever, cough, sore eyes and a rash. There is no treatment, and complications can be severe, including hospitalisation.
The only way to prevent measles is to be vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine.
