Rich Chinese citizens are illegally buying teeny-tiny marmoset monkeys as pets.

These small little monkeys are sold for around $6000NZD and are the world’s smallest primates.

Because 2016 is the year of the monkey these little animals are highly sought after.

WHAT ARE MARMOSET MONKEYS?
Native only to east-central Brazil, common marmosets are very small monkeys with relatively long tails. They stand only 14cm tall and the key to their survival is that they work together in a pack to collect food and stay safe.

Marmoset monkeys have a variety of survival skills learned in their traditional forested habitat, which make them successful city residents too.
