The Maori King, King Tuheitia, has been admitted to Waikato Hospital  after suffering complications with his diabetes.

The 59-year old was currently undergoing tests to further pinpoint exactly what is wrong.

King Tuheitia has been in poor health for some time, suffering from diabetes and cancer.

Yesterday around 500 Waikato Tainui gathered at Turangawaewae Marae, near Ngaruawahia, to say karakia (prayers) for King Tuheitia.

A hui would be held tomorrow to decide who will take over the King’s duties while he is in hospital.
