A German resident has been left embarrassed after discovering what he thought was an unexploded WWII bomb was actually just a rather large courgette.

The 81-year-old man called police to his house in Bretten, near the city of Karlsruhe in Germany.

Upon arrival, however, police realised the unexploded bomb was actually just a massive courgette that had somehow made its way into his garden.

Officers said the vegetable “really did look like a bomb”.

The man does not grow courgettes, and police believe that the offending item must have been thrown over his fence.

The courgette was very dark in colour and weighed in at a very impressive 5kg. It was 40cm in length.

Unexploded bombs are a common discovery in Germany. In May this year, 50,000 people had to be evacuated following the discovery of a dormant explosive in Hannover.

  1. Pretty funny but he is smart for calling the police about what he thought was a bomb since you don’t go poking bombs they might explode doing that
