Have you ever had an overdue library book? I bet not as overdue as this book.

An 11-year-old girl checked out the poetry anthology in 1934, and was found by her son during a spring clean 84 years later.

He has escaped a fine after returning a library book 84 years after it was borrowed. Just imagine what that fine would have been.

It was borrowed from Shreve Memorial Library in Louisiana, USA.

The book is a collection of poems written as first-person narratives by the dead residents of the fictional town of Spoon River, reflecting on their lives and deaths.

The stamped library card from the book shows it was due back on 14 April 1934.

  1. I actually did the math and worked out that if I got a book today and returned it 84 years later it would cost me $2,454,480 at the current overdue rate of 80c a day which my local library charges. If you add Inflation it would be even more!

  2. 50 C per day late 0.50×7=$3.50×4368=

    15,000 Thousand Dollar Fine
Not completely sure but it just an estimation
