Large traces of lead have been found in some Dunedin water.

Yesterday, the Dunedin City Council issued a notice to Waikouaiti and Karitane residents to not use tap water for drinking, cooking or preparing food until further notice.

Tests showing elevated lead levels in the Waikouaiti river were recorded in August last year.

However, this was not passed on to residents due to an email error.

This means that some Dunedin residents have been using the contaminated water for 6 weeks.
