Massive wildfires of forest and scrub have hit the western United State of America.

Currently their are around 80 large active wildfires across 13 states.

The largest blaze, about 400km south of Portland, was started on 6 July by lightening and has scorched more than 162,000 hectares.

More than 2000 firefighters and support crew had contained about 42 percent of the fire by Saturday, although the fire jumped containment lines the night before, he said.

One of the main problems from the fires is smoke. In some places it is that bad it has blocked the sun and is now starting to affect local weather systems.

The smoke clouds have been carried by the jet stream winds and other air currents as far as the Northeastern cities of New York and Boston.
