Kiwi Microbiologist Dr Siouxsie Wiles has sent an important health message to New Zealanders.

She has warned people not to follow US President Donald Trump suggestion to inject themselves with disinfectant after it could kill COVID-19.

During President Trump’s press conference on Thursday, he talked up new research which showed that the coronavirus appeared to weaken when exposed to sunlight and heat. He also suggested bleach and isopropyl could kill it within five minutes.

Trump has also been criticised by US doctors and scientists for giving “irresponsible” and “dangerous” advice about treating coronavirus.

Most disinfectants contain bleach which would make you very seriously ill and could kill you if it gets inside your body.
