Kereru named Bird of the Year

The kererū has been named the 2018 New Zealand Bird of the Year.
It is the first time it has won the award.
The kererū collected 5833 votes, with the kākāpō coming second with 3772 votes and the kakī (black stilt) came in third with 2995 votes.
This year was the competition’s most popular yet. It attracted over 48,000 votes, up from 41,000 in 2017.
