Researchers at New South Wales University have discovered that unhealthy diets of cakes, fast foods and sweet treats can not only have an impact on weight, but on the memory too.

An experiment showed that rats on high-fat diets had weakened memories after almost a week.

The rats taking part in the trial where placed on a range of different diets.

It was the rats on diets with high fat and sugar that had impaired memories.

These diets included cakes, chips and biscuits. The affected rats could not notice when an object had been moved as well as the unaffected rats.

The rats also showed inflammation in the part of the brain linked to spatial memory.

The damage is thought to be permanent as the memory damage was not reversed when the rats switched to a healthy diet.
