A strange ritual recently took place as part of a Spanish festival, where men dressed as devils jumped over babies on the ground.
The festival is held on the first Sunday after ‘Corpus Cristi,’ an old catholic rite to cleanse the babies of original sin and to grant them safe passage through life with protection from illness and evil spirits.
The babies taking part were born in the past 12 months of the year and were laid on mattresses on the street.
The festival has been rated one of the most dangerous in the world, with the infants at the mercy of the men jumping over them.
The ‘devils’ also attempt to ‘cleanse’ older children and teens, chasing them through the streets with large whips.
However, in recent years, Pope Benedict has asked Spanish priests to distance themselves from the ancient ritual and to detach the tradition from Catholicism. The church teaches that it is the waters of baptism that cleanse original sin, not jumping devils.
Thankfully there have been no reported injuries to the babies over the years.
