Epsom MP and former ACT Party leader John Banks has announced he will resign from Parliament.

Last  Thursday Banks was found guilty of filing a false electoral return in Auckland’s High Court.

Technically Banks has not been charged yet so he could have stayed on in Parliament until the election.

However, pressure from the opposition forced Banks to announce his retirement.

Mr Banks said  that it had been a “privileged to serve the people of Epsom and New Zealand at both a local level and in Wellington.”
