The United Nations has announced that it is holding an emergency meeting due to the  situation in Gaza.

Yesterday the death toll on the Palestinian side passed  100 people in a single day.

The Israeli military said 13 of its soldiers had been killed by the Palestinians.

Many of the Palestinians killed were civilians and young children.

The situation is very delicate at the moment. Israel is bombing the region because a group called Hamas has been attacking Israel.

However, Hamas hide within local communities which is the reason for the large casualty rate when Israel attacks.

President Obama has called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an effort to stop the fighting.

The latest casualties brought the death toll since Israeli air and naval bombardments began on 8 July to 434, many of them civilians.
