India has launched its first rocket into space and it is hoping that it will reach Mars.

The unmanned robotic spacecraft is being sent to Mars to carry out experiments.

The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) lifted off on Tuesday 5 November.

The plan is for the spacecraft to travel for 300 days and should reach Mars orbit in September 2014.

Some people have questioned whether India should be spending $130 million on a space mission when the country has one of the highest rankings for childhood malnutrition in the world.

If the mission is successful they will be the fourth space agency to reach Mars.
